Juicy, fragrant seasonal blood oranges.
Grown in eastern Sicily in the fertile area enriched by the volcanic soil surrounding Mount Etna, these heirloom oranges have a protected status in law.
The intense difference in temperatures between day and night and the highly fertile soil causes the oranges to produce anthocyanins, which are responsible for the red color of the flesh. Anthocyanins have strong anti-oxident properties and the oranges are high in vitamin C, making them extremely healthy.
They have a unique and unparallelled flavour with hints of raspberry and is almost floral in character. Available at the end of December through to March, these are the absolute highlight of the orange calendar. Depending on your taste you may prefer them at the start of the season when the floral/raspberry flavour and acidity is at their most intense or later in the season when both of these mellow out.
Every year, in the last week of February, when the orange is at its peak production, in the streets of the small town of Palagonia, in the province of Catania, the Sagra dell’Arancia Rossa festival is held in Sicily, where you can drink juice and taste dishes containing the orange, which is considered the very essence of Sicily.
